Patong Beach refers to the beach and town on Phuket‘s west coast. It is the main tourist resort in Phuket, and contains an important centre of Phuket’s nightlife and shopping. The beach became popular with Western tourists, especially Europeans, in the late 1980s.
Patong’s pulsating nightlife never fails to attract curious visitors every evening. Like a magnet, it’s hard to resist a wander down Soi Bangla – the heart of bar scene where girls, neon lights and deafening music compete for your attention. Over a hundred bars ranging from beer bars (girlie bars), Go-Go bars, nightclubs, pubs are condensed into the small action packed area fondly known as « Bangla » where the only priority is to have a good time.
The girls aim to please – dancing around poles, engaging in banter, or coaxing customers to play simple bar games like « Connect » or « Hammer the nail » to break the ice. The objective is to entice customers to buy drinks and hopefully, take them away for the evening.
Soi Crocodile: Also known as ‘Soi Katoey’ for the prominent stage where ladyboys shake everything they’ve got (and some things that were just recently added). This is the most consistently busy of the bar sois and
even on a weeknight in low season there are plenty of punters around.
Soi Easy: Best known for the upstairs Aussie Bar, which attracts a faithful crowd of… Australians, Soi Easy is the bar soi closest to the beach on Bangla Road.
Soi Eric: Run by a professional and well-organized management team from Europe, Soi Eric has done a good job of bringing order from chaos. The first thing you notice is that Soi Eric doesn’t sound like battle of the bands. There is one DJ who plays the records for the entire street, which cuts down on some of the noise and confusion of the other sois.
Soi Gonzo: Next to Soi Easy you’ll find Soi Gonzo, a cool little place that often gets overlooked between the neon of Easy and the ladboys of Soi Crocodile. Soi Gonzo is the place to go to enjoy all the enticements of Bangla Road without having to deal with the crowds. There are maybe ten bars on Soi Gonzo, such as the interesting-looking Black Cat, but the perennial favourite is The Wet Spot, the friendliest bar on the soi.
Soi Lion: Located between Soi Tiger and Soi Seadragon, Soi Lion is
currently under renovation or about to be replaced. Some of the popular bars from Soi Lion, such as the Stockholm Bar, have moved to Soi Sansabai, the street opposite of Soi Bangla, across Rat U This Road.
Soi Seadragon: has entirely been redesigned and rebuilt, featuring now two levels of beer bars in the central lane. A unique sound system cover the whole area and light effects are playing on the giant roof that now protect the full street. Lined on both sides with a lot of new go-go bars, and some others more known, Soi Seadragon is the place to go to watch scantily clad maidens shake what they’ve got for all they’re worth.
Banana Bar is an open-air pub & restaurant and a part of Patong Beach Hotel. On the Beach Road, towards Soi Bangla and just outside Banana Disco, (a tremendously popular venue), Banana Bar offers live music nightly by the popular Sandman Band as well as an Elvis Show every Friday night from 20:30 – 21:30. Booking in advance in high season is recommended.
Hard Rock cafe, is the latest addition to the Patong live music scene and is located on the Rat-U-Thit/Ruamjai Road corner adjacent to Courtyard Marriott Resort at the southern end of Patong. Situated on a 1,330sqm site, Hard Rock offers a 300-seater restaurant and bar area, patio seating and their signature retail Rock Shop which houses some impressive memorabilia from famous stars such as Madonna, Elvis Presley and Guns N’ Roses.
Molly Malone’s is still going strong after more than a decade of delivering Guinness, Kilkenny pub food and good, semi-acoustic music. Expect jigs and reels and plenty of good-natured humour from talented musicians.
Margarita’s is a step above the usual Bangla brashness and is a perfect place to people-watch and listen to live bands playing every evening from 19:30 onwards. With food, TV and a pool table.
There are a few massage parlours in Phuket town which offer similar services to the Patong Christin massage parlour however few tourists ever visit these Phuket oil massage parlors which have mostly Thai clients. Most travelers staying at a hotel at one of the Phuket beaches along the west coast of the island prefer visiting Cristine massage Phuket parlour as its a bit of pain to visit Phuket town for a Phuket massage as it is on the other side of the island.

Patpong, Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy
These are the famous entertainment places in Bangkok, Thailand, that draw visitors by the thousands. Get an overview of the popular bars. See where the action is and come and join the crowd.
At Nana Plaza we cover the well known bars and the bar girls, such as : the Rainbow bars, Hollywood Rock, Hollywood Strip, Playskool, Voodoo, G-spot, Rock Hard, Silver Dragon, Mandarin, Carnival etc. Nana Plaza is a great favorite with tourists and short-time visitors, and has possibly become the most visited nightlife area in Bangkok.
The go-go bar is an institution of Bangkok’s « naughty nightlife ». In a typical go-go, several dozen dancers in bikinis (or less) crowd the stage, shuffling back and forth to loud music and trying to catch the eye of punters in the audience. Some (but not all) also put on shows where girls perform on stage, but these are generally tamer than you’d expect — nudity, for example, is technically forbidden. In a beer bar, there are no stages and the girls are wearing street clothes.
Some simple rules of etiquette to follow in a go-go bar:
- A drink in your hand is required at all times. Most places charge around 100-150 baht for most drinks.
- Lady drinks cost a little more and earn you the privilege of chatting with the lady/gent of your choice for a while.
- Taking a dancer out of his/her place of employment before closing time will cost you a bar fine of around 600 baht. This is the bar’s share, the rest is up to you two.
- No photos inside. If you’re lucky, you’ll merely have your camera confiscated, but you also stand a fair chance of getting beaten up for your trouble.
- Look, but don’t touch (unless invited to). Getting too frisky will get you kicked out.
- Bring along your passport. Police raids are not uncommon and you’re off to the police staton for the night if you can’t produce one on demand.
As go-go bars close around 02:00, there are so-called after-hour clubs that stay open till the sun gets up. They are not hard to find — just hop in a taxi. Taxi drivers are eager to drive you there, as they get a hefty commission from club owners to bring you to them — you might even get the ride for free. These clubs generally feel grim and edgy, and there are so-called « freelancers » among the girls (prostitutes). Some well-known after-hour clubs include Bossy Club in Pratunam, Spicy Club near Siam Square and the always famous Thermae on Sukhumvit between sois 15 and 17 in the basement underneath the Ruamchit short time hotel.
Bangkok is known for its go-go bars and the prostitution that comes along with it. Technically, some aspects of prostitution are illegal (eg. soliciting, pimping), but enforcement is rare, and brothels are common. It’s not illegal to pay for sex or to pay a « barfine » (a fee the bar collects if you want to take an employee away).
Many hotels retain the ID cards of prostitutes for the duration of their visit. Whilst most prostitutes are employed by bars or similar businesses, some are « freelancers ». Petty theft and other problems are more common with these freelancers. HIV and AIDS awareness is better than it used to be, but infection statistics among entertainment industry workers remain high; freelancers are the highest risk group. Almost all girls insist on using condoms.
